How It Works

How GPA Calculation Works

GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credit hours attempted. Our calculator supports both single semester and cumulative GPA calculations.

Grade Point Values (4.0 Scale)

A+ / A (90-100%)4.0
A- (87-89%)3.7
B+ (83-86%)3.3
B (80-82%)3.0
B- (77-79%)2.7
C+ (73-76%)2.3
C (70-72%)2.0
F (Below 70%)0.0

Calculation Formulas

Quality Points = Grade Points Ă— Credit Hours

Example: A (4.0) in 3-credit course = 12 quality points

GPA = Total Quality Points Ă· Total Credit Hours

Example: 36 quality points Ă· 12 credits = 3.0 GPA

Weighted GPA adds +1.0 for AP/Honors courses

Example: A in AP course = 5.0 instead of 4.0

Important Notes

• Different schools may use different grading scales and GPA calculations

• Some schools don't include + and - grades in GPA calculations

• Weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0 when AP/Honors courses are included

• Graduate schools often recalculate GPAs using their own methods

• Class rank may be more important than absolute GPA for admissions
