Calories Per Serving Calculator

Divide a recipe's total calories by its serving count u2014 and see why "servings" is a planning assumption, not a guarantee about any one actual plate.

Calories Per Serving Calculator

This works out the average calories in one serving of a recipe, from its total calorie count and how many servings it makes.

How it works

Calories per serving

calories per serving = total recipe calories ÷ number of servings

“Servings” is a stated portion, not a measured one

A recipe labelled “serves 6” divides its total calories by 6 regardless of whether six people actually eat equal portions — a serving size is a planning assumption, not a guarantee about what ends up on any particular plate. This calculator computes the average exactly as defined; it can’t know whether real portions matched the assumption.

How to use this calculator

  1. Add up the total calories for the whole recipe, from ingredient labels or a nutrition database.
  2. Enter how many servings the recipe makes.
  3. Read the average calories per serving.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the total calories for a recipe?

Sum each ingredient’s calorie count for the amount actually used — most nutrition labels state calories per a specific serving size of that ingredient, which needs scaling to the amount your recipe actually uses before adding it to the total.

Why might my actual serving be more or fewer calories than this average?

Because real portions rarely divide a dish into perfectly identical shares — one person’s “serving” from a shared dish can easily be noticeably larger or smaller than another’s, even though both are counted as one serving in the recipe’s stated total.

Does this account for how ingredients are prepared?

No — it works from whatever total you enter, which should already reflect the ingredients as actually used (including any that are trimmed, drained, or otherwise not fully incorporated into the final dish).

Should I include calories from cooking oil or butter used in the pan?

Yes, if you want an accurate total — oil and fat used in cooking are real calories in the finished dish, even though they’re easy to forget when adding up a recipe’s ingredients.

Can I use this to work out how many servings to cut a dish into for a target calorie count?

Yes — rearranging the same relationship, divide the total calories by your target per-serving figure to find how many servings you’d need to cut the dish into.

Food and cooking writer

R. Delacroix writes the food and cooking calculators — ingredient ratios, scaling, cooking and thawing times. Cooking guidance is full of rules of thumb that are useful but not exact, so these pages label an approximation as an approximation rather than dressing it up as precision. Where food safety is involved, the page points to the temperature check rather than the clock.
