Find how much water to add to a given amount of dry rice before cooking.
How it works
Water needed is rice times the water-to-rice ratio: Water = Rice × Ratio. The default 1:2 ratio is standard for long-grain white rice, so 2 cups of rice needs 4 cups of water — the ratio is adjustable since other rice varieties (brown rice, sushi rice) call for different amounts.
What this does not include
This calculates the water-to-rice ratio for stovetop cooking; rice cookers and other methods sometimes use built-in markings or slightly different ratios of their own.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the amount of dry rice, in cups.
- Adjust the ratio if you’re not cooking standard long-grain white rice.
- Read off the water needed.
A worked example
2 cups of rice at a 2:1 water ratio: water needed = 2×2 = 4 cups.
1.5 cups of rice at the same 2:1 ratio: water needed = 3 cups.
What the variables mean
| Variable | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Rice | Amount of dry rice, in cups |
| Ratio | Water-to-rice ratio, which varies by rice type |
Edge cases worth knowing
Different rice types need different ratios. White rice commonly uses a 2:1 ratio, while brown rice or some specialty varieties often need more water — the right ratio depends on the specific rice, not a single universal number.
Zero cups of rice makes the calculation meaningless, so the calculator declines to show a result for that input.
Why do different rice varieties need different ratios?
Rice varieties differ in starch content and grain structure, which changes how much water each grain absorbs during cooking — brown rice, for instance, typically needs more water and time than white rice.
What ratio does brown rice use?
Brown rice commonly uses a ratio closer to 1:2.25 or 1:2.5, since its bran layer slows water absorption compared to white rice — adjust the ratio field accordingly.
Does rinsing the rice change the ratio needed?
Rinsing removes surface starch and can slightly reduce stickiness, but it doesn’t meaningfully change how much cooking water the rice itself needs to absorb.
